RAWALPINDI: Secretary and security guard of slain Jamiat Ulama-e-Islam-Sami (JUI-S) leader Maulana Sami-ul-Haq were detained and questioned for three hours over his assassination.
A First Information Report (FIR) was also lodged against unknown assailant(s) in connection to Sami-ul-Haq’s murder at Airport Police Station in Rawalpindi on his son, Hamidul Haq’s complaint.
The security guard and secretary were also released on Hamid’s request to attend funeral processions of Sami-ul-Haq but the police said the two could be taken into custody again for further questioning.
Hamid also accused the Afghanistan government of being involved in his father’s assassination. He told that an Afghan govt delegation had visited his father earlier urging the slain JUI-S leader to play a crucial part for peace in the neighbouring country.
The former senator and an ally of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Maulana Sami-ul-Haq, also known as ‘Father of the Taliban’, was alone at his house in Bahria Town when stabbed to death by unidentified assailant(s).
Hamid told media that his father had been ailing with heart problems and that he was in bed when the attacker(s) came. “His driver Haqqani had gone out. On his return, he found Maulana Sahib lying in a pool of blood in his bed,” he said, adding that his father was stabbed and probably shot as well.
Maulana, 81, was rushed to Safari Hospital following the attack where he was pronounced dead on arrival. JUI-S spokesperson Maulana Ahmed Shah confirmed his death in the attack which took place in the jurisdiction of Airport police station.
